Summer special>> Kidz' Kitchen

Heylos to mommies, I am very sure that you all must be having tough time while keeping your kids occupied during summer holidays. My previous blog post was about requesting all parents to think beyond summer camps. It's like spend more quality and quantity time with your kids during their summer holidays as this will frame a lifetime memory for them. From my 'kitchen counter' earlier post I've shared some healthy yet yummy recipes to please the fussy eaters.  
Now, what about getting them into cooking and let them create an healthy and yummy meal for them. The idea of getting kids into kitchen might give a night mare but trust me with no fire, no knife cooking recipes by me would make your kids cooking experience a memorable one for them and yourself. Making kids cook with no fire, and no knife, will improve their sensory, imagination, creativity and make them responsible too.Moreover the kids cooking session would also encourage them to eat fresh, healthy and yummy food. My idea to start a kids cooking session is to inculcate the healthy eating habits amongst kids and make them/their parents understand that anything prepared at home with fresh ingredients is a an healthy option than serving them boring food.

Below are few tried and tested recipes by my kidz' Kitchen @ KydzAdda, Bangalore. Please try these recipes with your kids at home and let me know how was your experience.

Pizza Time!

Pizza is a great family favourite and the best thing about it is that you can make it to suit the whole family. It can be a dough base or just some delicious toppings baked onto pita bread/normal bread. You can also make a sweet pizza (spread some nutella and garnish with dry fruits) for dessert. It is that versatile!
Special Info: Gluten free, no soda, no maida, no preservatives
Serving Size: 6-8 kids

Freshly kneaded wheat pizza dough. You may use wheat bread also.
1 cup tomato paste puree
1 cup fresh basil leaves
2 boiled and chopped tomatoes for pizza sauce
1 cups grated tasty or mozzarella cheese
Choice of veggies like tomatoes, corn, capsicum, onion, mushroom
Soya, paneer (optional)

Preheat oven to 180°C for fifteen minutes. Place dough ball on the cook top and roll it into roti/round/circle. Sprinkle some flour if required. Place the pizza bases on baking trays (you may have to use the bench, depending on your tray collection, spread 2-3 spoons of tomato pizza passata/pizza sauce. Divide fresh basil leaves between bases (need to go underneath everything else so they don’t burn). Top with choice of veggies available at your home kitchen, like sweet potato, capsicums, mushrooms, tomatoes, onion and top it with loads of grated mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle italian seasoning like oregano, basil and thyme as per your choice of herbs. If This is not much, then you may add paneer/cottage cheeze too. Bake in oven for about 15 minutes or may be until cheese is golden and bases crunchy. Before serving, sprinkle over a handful of salad leaves, olives, jalapenos. Enjoy it with your friends or give a surprise to your parents. Also do not forget to clean after cooking and put the leftover veggies, cheese back in fridge.

Veg Frankie
Frankie is the most popular, yet an healthy street food. Though it's originates from western countries but in India we have our own variations depending on our taste buds. You can make a frankie with choice of subji, or cooked veggies available. Frankie can convert an any ordinary roti-subji or Dosa into a yummy stomach filling snack for kids. All you need few salad items, subi of the day, mayonnaise or tomato sauce and a pinch of chaat masala.
Special Info: Nutritious yet mouth-watering snack for kids. It's Gluten free too!
Serving Size: 6-8 kids

6-8 Freshly cooked wheat chapatti/ parattha
1 cup chopped tomato
1 cup paneer cubes
1 cup boiled peas/corn
2 cups choice of pre-prepared subji (We used aloo zeera subji)
1 cup Cheese
1 Tbsp Chaat Masala (We called it magic masala in kid's kitchen class)
Also you may add choice of veggies like tomatoes, capsicum, onion, sweet corn.
Soya, mushroom, Mayonnaise (optional)
1 cup Tomato puree
1 Tbsp of butter
Place the wheat roti on the counter/plate. Take 2 spoonful of tomato puree and spread evenly with butter knife. Put one spoon of subji, make sure it's aligned straight, so that it's easy to roll the frankie. Place other veggie toppings like paneer, peas, corn, tomatoes; placing them in a straight line just like subji. Top it with Mayonnaise and grated cheese.
Make sure you put little of each veggies and ingredients and do not overfill it as it would be difficult to roll the frankie. Then Sprinkle Magic Masala ie Chaat masala. And just then Start rolling frankie slowly. Make sure that the chhapatti does not tear. Once the frankie is rolled just brush it with some butter and Microwave it for 2 mins at med temp.
For oven broil it of 5 mins at 180 degrees. Take it out from oven/microwave and place on your serving dish. Then cut it into 2 pieces for easy and mess free eating.

Protein Sandwich
Sandwich is the most popular snack amongst kids as well as moms. Of course for it's yummy and healthy qualities. It's the most versatile and easy to make snack for busy moms and kids who loves cooking. You prepare as many healthy variations like spinach corn sandwich, cheese and pineapple sandwich or may be you can try beetroot and tomato sandwich.

Serving Size: 6-8 kids

  • 6-8 slices of wheat bread
  • 10-15 thin slices of tomatoes
  • 10-15 thin slices of boiled potatoes
  • 1 cup boiled Kabuli Channa
  • 1 cup boiled peas
  • 1 cup finely chopped Spinach
  • 4 Cheese cubes
  • 1 Tbsp Chaat Masala (We called it magic masala in kid's kitchen class)
  • Also you may add choice of veggies like sliced capsicum, onion, babycorn.
  • Soya, mushroom (optional)
  • 1 cup Tomatoe sauce
  • 10 Tbsp of butter
Apply 1 tbsp of butter (With kids friendly butter knife) on one side of each wheat bread.
Spread tomato sauce evenly and generously on the other side of bread.
Place 2-3 slice of boiled potatoes on a bread. Then top it with mashed kabula channa, peas and little of finely chopped spinach. Then neatly place 3-4 thin slice of tomatoes and place the other peice of bread on to it and press it slightly. Now take the help of an adult i.e mom, dad or teacher and ask them to put the uncooked sandwich into griller or sandwich maker. Take it out of the griller/sandwich maker and let it cool for 2 mins and cut it into 2 piece diagonally.

Minty lemonade
In this season of scorching heat, summer coolers for kids are must to keep them hydrated. So this time beat the heat with freshly prepared lemonade with a refreshing dash of mint leaves.
Special Info: Easy and quick nutritious snack for kids. It's Gluten free too!
Serving Size: 6-8 kids

  • 1 cup brown sugar (can reduce to 3/4 cup) or 2 cups of Glucose / 1 cup of honey
  • 1 cup water (for the sweet syrup)
  • 1 cup lemon juice3 to 4 cups room temp water (to dilute)
  • 2 Tbsp of Chaat Masala (Optional)

Request an adult to prepare a simple sugar syrup by heating the sugar and water in a small saucepan until the sugar is dissolved completely. If you are unable to get brown sugar you can use glucose powder too. While the sugar syrup is getting prepared, use a lemon squeezer to extract the juice from 4 to 6 lemons(make sure you do not crush the lemon seeds), enough for one cup of juice. Add the juice and the sugar syrup to a pitcher/jug/ huge wide mouth vessels. Add 3 to 4 cups of cold water, more or less depending on the desired consistency. Refrigerate 30 to 40 minutes. Avoid usage of ice cubes, this will lead to sore throat. If the lemonade is a little sweet for your taste, add a little more straight lemon juice to it. Crush and tear few fresh mint leaves and put it into a jug and stir properly. Serve in glass and garnish it with thin lemon slice. 

Give a room to your imagination with having kids in kitchenand being little helper to you. Also try new summer coolers which are non-fizzy, healthy, natural and yummy. This will help your child to be summer safe and have happy and healthy holidays.
